indentured servants, they were members of the family, even given guns to fight off indians. When he died, he had no "slaves" to pass on in his will, they had all worked off their servitude.

They were indentured servants, just like most poor folks that came over from England, they too were indentured servants for a defined period after which they were free to do as they pleased.
