other than the confidence that the information is "correct" and verifiable to the best of its abilities.

Also, who would control the observation data needed to generate the weather forecasts and for verification. Obs data is needed as input for the equation-based models. If private industry was the sole source of forecasts, they would be the source of the observation data as well. So, the verification would also be controlled.
