I'm a little biased there. I have two degrees in Atmospheric Science and have spent a good portion of my career in the field.
But, weather influences almost every industry, economy and environment (in some way). This is going to sound very backwards and screwed up, but government weather forecasts actually allow for a high degree of scrutiny and transparency. If we had private industry as the sole source of weather information, think of the manipulation risk involved across all of the industries and relationships that make up our economy, world and environment.
