ST. LOUIS: Thomas M. 'Tom' Ferry: State billiards champion and business owner
04/13/2006
Thomas M. "Tom" Ferry, onetime pool hustler and state billiards champion and business owner, died Tuesday (April 11, 2006) of multiple myeloma cancer at his residence in Richmond Heights. He was 60.
Mr. Ferry was born in St. Louis. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers College high school. His real education came from the local pool halls of St. Louis. For more than four decades, Mr. Ferry was a successful hustler and road player.
As with any rounder, opponents who gambled away their paychecks were not a concern of Mr. Ferry. "I believe in the Golden Rule," said Mr. Ferry in a rare newspaper interview in the old Globe-Democrat in 1977. "Those who have the gold do the ruling."
In 1978, Mr. Ferry's pool hustling days began to slow when he met his future wife, Rita R. Korte of St. Louis. At the inaugural Missouri State 9 Ball Championship in 1982, Mr. Ferry played it straight and captured the title. Last year, he entered the tournament for his second time and second title.
With his early hustling days behind him, Mr. Ferry settled down and became the owner and operator of Community Magnets, a direct mail advertising business that he ran until his death.
A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. April 22 at Little Flower Church, 1225 Boland Place in Richmond Heights. Mr. Ferry donated his body to the Washington University School of Medicine.
In addition to his wife, among the survivors are his son, Tommy Ferry, and a daughter, Katie Ferry, who lived at home; and a brother, Daniel J. Ferry of St. Louis County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, 1465 South Grand Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63104; or Carmelite Monastery, 9150 Clayton Road, St. Louis, Mo. 63124.
