Not on an annual basis, but Mizzou can go higher.
And it is not out of the realm of possibility that Mizzou could go to the peak.
Many of you criticize those posters who act like we should be going out and trying to hire Saban. And those folks should be criticized. BUT, as I have always argued, any time we make a hire, we should be trying to hire the next up and coming Nick Saban.
The secret to coaching hires at a place like Mizzou is to find that guy a year or two before everybody else finds him. It is not easy. It is in fact, quite hard most of the time. Does not mean we should not try.
But, to get back to the point of MU's ceiling....nothing has really changed here. With your run of the mill "good" coach (not great, not bad, not the next Nick Saban) but a good coach, Mizzou can and should be this team...
win 8 games 6-7 times per decade
win 10+ games 1-2 times per decade
win 6-7 games 1-2 times per decade
Miss a bowl game once in a blue moon. Considering the current system, we should never miss a bowl game. It will happen, but it shouldn't.
If we hire a great coach, this bumps up. If we make a bad hire, it drops down. But this is what Mizzou should expect to be in any given decade. It is in no way unreasonable to expect this.
Note, I am not talking about National Titles or even SEC championships. Yes, a couple of times before I die, Mizzou should win a conference title. We haven't done it yet and I'm not expecting us to win one in any specific timeframe less than the next 45 years.
As far as Barry Odom goes...it is quite unlikely that he will have the stars align better than they did this year. It is fair to think he'll never have a better QB than Drew Lock as a senior. He was favored in 8 games. 10 were winnable. He had exceptional depth on the DL. He had good, not great, but good LB play. He has some talent in the backfield, but they weren't often in position to make plays. After Drew, he returned all of his offense except 1 receiver that probably was addition by subtraction. There were a few injuries, but he was in position to win 10 anyway and his decision to play Hall against UGA probably cost Hall the other games.
Until Barry Odom proves otherwise, this is what Mizzou fans should expect.
Win 6-8 games.
Blow some games that were won.
Be unprepared off of layoffs such as the offseason or in bowls.
Lack of smart play = mental mistakes, blown assignments & penalties
Be quite exciting at times
Be mind bogglingly frustrating at times
Recruit solid kids and solid players but few stud prospects
