I got drafted in 73. By then there were no longer deferments issued for college students, married men, etc. I don't question Trump's alleged 4F type injuries. I had several friends, all fine athletes who failed their military physical and didn't get drafted. Others used their parents' political connections to wangle scarce national guard slots. Some avoided the draft and joined the Navy or secured non-Vietnam assignments, but served six year enlistments. Military service was very unpopular and few volunteered to serve.
