I think the problem with the M is not the helmet, but the branding. We obviously did not steal/borrow the "M" from Michigan, or anybody else, in connection with the helmet. The problem is using M's on merchandise is confusing. The blue and maize M merchandise looks like the black and old gold M merchandise. By using a unique logo, there is no confusion.
I was more disappointed that we dropped the three stripes than the M.
