Stars do matter --- somewhat. And they don't matter --- somewhat.
The only teams that win National Titles are always the ones with classes in the top 10 annually. That's proven to play out every year. But despite that, pretty much everyone that wins a title was blue blood anyway. And blue bloods get preferential treatment by the services, so there is some chicken and egg analysis that clouds the conclusion.
We also see that if you aren't in the top 10 annually... there isn't much difference in the on-the-field results between those ranked 10 - 50. It's pretty much a crap-shoot based on coaching prowess and development.
