With Baumgartner apparently done here at Mizzou, it is stunning what has happened with our pitching recruits over the years. It's almost hard to believe. And makes it not surprising at all that we have struggled to finish at .500 and barely make the NCAA tournament 2 years running, with a third season like that likely coming up.

The last high school pitching recruits to finish their careers at Missouri are Chelsea Thomas and Kristen Nottlemann, who both started here in 2009. And the next freshmen recruits who even have a chance to do that are the 3 recent signees who will start playing in 2020. 2009 to 2020 is just stunning.

Tell me if I'm missing someone, but our freshmen pitching recruits since 2009 were:

Erwin 2012
Finucane 2014
Stangel 2014
Lowary 2015
Baumgartner 2016
Conrad 2017
Rice 2018

None of those 7 stayed all 4 years, and 4 lasted just a year (Erwin left very early in her sophomore year).

Because of this, increasingly we have had to turn to transfer pitchers to prevent the program from really cratering, and, unfortunately, the recent trend is for many of those transfers lacking any D1 experience. Transfers over the last 6 years have been:

Marble 2014
Baxter 2015
Norman 2017
Daniel 2018
Scates 2018
Koester 2019
Gasper 2019
Schockley 2019
Judge 2020

This years pitching staff is completely transfers: Norman, Scates, Daniel, Koester, Gasper, Schockley. Only Norman graduates.

Next year we will have 9 pitchers on the roster if no one transfers out, which is insane. And hopefully, considering the apparent lack of star quality, Coach LA is going to keep trying to land an ace type transfer or two from a D1 school for 2020, so there may be even more. The 2020 staff right now will include 6 transfers, none with prior D1 experience (sorry, not counting Judge who was at Minn and Ok State but hardly threw), and three freshmen (Schumacher, Nichols, Weber).

This isn't a coaching debate. Just an illustration that you can't expect to have an elite program in a sport where pitching is, well, everything, with this grim history.
