It's a matter of being a part of the conversation. Yes, winning helps but that is just a part of it. Look at us as an example. We weren't on anyone's radar until we hired Coach Spurrier. We still lost but we were talked about. Spurrier gave people something to talk about. We might have lost and lost bad but "The head ball coach" had a sound bite on ESPiN. That kept our name in the news. That was enough. Overrated at times? Yes.
You either have to be a middling team and all the sudden make noise by winning, (Kentucky), or have some character (Spurrier) that they like to talk about. If you are a 5-8 win team year after year, or more often than not, you are just another team they don't take seriously.
Missouri and South Carolina have a lot more in common than our respective towns.
