the same for Intelligence agencies like CIA, NSA. Persons in those positions retain security clearances so they can be called upon in critical situations. They are not provided ongoing information unless it is required to read them in. Maintaining their clearance provides the avenue to do that timely. I was not at that level, but on 911 I was contacted regarding my work as a former intelligence officer and was informed my clearances were still active.
