A guy scores one basket in the biggest game of the year and you conclude it had nothing to do with defense.

He did miss shots, but do you ever think the defense made those shots more difficult? Ever think how they were closing out mattered? Ever think the rapidity of their rotations mattered? Ever think where they forced him to shoot mattered? Ever think any of that mattered?

Defense certainly mattered.
