I'm guessing the origin of the redshirt rule was for the student athlete to be able to focus on academics.

That said if the guy is practicing all week I don't see how it impacts his academics for him to play on Saturday. Why not just take the next step and allow the guy to play college sports as long as he is enrolled in school?
