The medical hardship requirements are 30% of your games or three games, whichever is greater (I've also seen NCAA documents that say one third of the season). That applies to regularly scheduled games, so I assume that means 12 for football. Which means the cutoff is either three or four games, depending on how the NCAA calculates the math.

Because this exception includes post-season games, though, even if the medical redshirt cutoff is three, I think it's fair to add a fourth game.

That allows a player to play the same amount he would in the case of a season-ending injury under existing rules then also play in a bowl game.
