"Majors" is Div. 1. After that, it's broken up into unofficial sub-divisions of "high-," "mid-," and "low-."
The term actually refers to conferences, not schools. The A-10 is a high-major conference. The Missouri Valley is a mid-major.
It's incorrect to state that Mizzou is the only major program in the state. Saying that Mizzou is the only "Power 5" (used to be "Power 6" before the Big East and American split up) is incorrect. To say that Mizzou is the only Power 5-conference school in the state is correct, but it doesn't mean much, because many states have only one school in a Power 5-conference, and some state don't have even one school in a Power 5 conference. To say that Mizzou is the only high-major school in Missouri would be debatable. Some would agree and others wouldn't.
Mid-major and low-major are still major. If there would be only "major" and that which is not major, then it would be "minor" — a term I've never seen used to describe NCAA programs. (I don't think the NCAA sanctions the "-major" descriptions, anyway.) This is simply logical. If you're not "major," you're "minor." "Mid-major" doesn't equate to "minor," does it?
If you mean "high-major" or "Power 5," say that, but don't simply say "major" when you're trying to separate the Power 5 from the mid-majors or low-majors. It reeks of arrogance and pretentiousness.
