Bill Self knew all along. It's not when he's made aware, it's when he knows other people are made aware.

Why do you think he used this fake accident as a smoke screen? Probably because the car he was driving was worth looking into his financial situation. Bill Self and Kansas didn't care to look into it until they thought the NCAA would find out through the FBI.
