Chicken before egg comment. It's like a steak - the chef and way it is cooked matters, but there is a clear difference between USDA select grade and USDA prime grade and then Japanese kobe/wagyu. What you start with does impact the final result to some degree.
Recruiting matters, as does in-game coaching and player development. You can be successful without one of those three phases but to sustain success over a period of time and win at the highest levels, you need to excel in all of them.
Like them or not, the data shows that significantly higher percentages of recruits at the 4 & 5 star level make the NFL.
From 2014 NFL draft and eligible recruits -
A 5* had a 3 in 5 chance of being drafted (16 of 27)
A 4* had a 1 in 5 chance of being drafted (77 of 395)
A 3* had a 1 in 18 chance of being drafted (92 of 1,644)
A 2*/unrated recruit had a 1 in 34 chance of being drafted (71 of 2,434).
