KCMO was named after the Kaw River because it is at the confluence of the MO and Kaw Rivers. That was a bad move, but at least we named it after the river, not the kansas territory/state. Then later, KCK was founded as a suburb of KCMO and was very deliberately named after KCMO, because the people founding it realized even then that its sole reason for existence was to leach off its MO counterpart.
