this is one of the untouchables of political policy (despite the stupid threats which hit the news) because most people easily find it to their advantage to own a home rather than to pay someone else to rent a home to them ... and it won't take much to show those voters, en masse, that eliminating this feature would actually be an advantage to what politicians market as "the rich".
Furthermore, there is a ton of 30-year debt priced dependent on the tax deduction; suddenly eliminating that tax deduction would make for a massive margin call in the markets and ultimately on a lot of homeowners.
