A Texas OL as announced he won't play in the Longhorn's bowl game in order to prepare for the NFL draft, where he's projected to be a possible first round pick. I don't blame him.
I'd suggest that if a team is not in the playoff, then the real value for a coach and a program is three-fold:
- recruiting value: another opportunity to show your product on the field, to sell recruits that they'll go bowling if they come to your school, etc.
- additional practice time (16 additional?): this is critical for younger players down the depth chart who will be competing for starting and backup spots the following season.
- low-risk fine-tuning work and rest and recuperation time: starters need the time to recover while still working on timing and rythm.
After that, the bowl game is a reward to players for their season (often a monetary reward given the gift programs) and a chance for alumni and boosters to party one more time and for development to continue building relationships.
Given all that, why NOT officially treat and market a non-playoff bowl game as a "Future's Game" for each program?
- exclude statistics from all official NCAA rankings
- exclude the win or loss from a coach's official record and therefore from his bonus structure
- exclude participation from eligibility clock - while player's must be academically eligible to participate, don't count the bowl game against their clock, i.e. allow Redshirting players to play without burning a year of eligibility
