I think it's your point that there shouldn't be credit granted at all to the President. That's probably true to a large degree.
I content that a President, through acts of war or aggression, can disrupt economic activity such that it would lead to stock market losses. This can be overt through attacking a country, or more subtle, such as suggesting that country will be met with fire and fury such that the world has never seen. These actions can be destabilizing and the markets would likely react.
