Almost a major concession from you to say its not all about 'play calling'. HUGE. here's my free opinion. WOW. To think the master has asked my opinion.
Does that magic potion come mainly from coaches or
from the right mix of players? Players who I think are on the same page who understand the system and yes its the coaches responsibility to establish that culture. Another thing highly underrated. Pinkel was good at it. It does take time.
Also - nice try. I never called it a 'magic potion' but said its underrated as far as putting together a successful program. Note not JUST team, but a program who can compete *sorry for the Pinkelism* at a high level year after year.
As you know, I've always said, you win as a program and you lose as a program. Coaches, starting with Odom are first in line. Thats where responsibility begins, but it doesn't end there.
If you want/need DDF. Do it. But stress fundamentals. Can you imagine a complex DDF play working if you had 11 guys out there NOT on the same page, not caring for each other, not caring if everyone you're blocking for, working for is successful ?? So to answer your question ultimately ‘chemistry’ is the coaches responsibility. A 2 Star kid who is self effacing can be and has been better than the 4 star egomaniacal kid who runs faster in many situations when you’re trying to be successful. Coaches need to recruit that kind of kid. Ask you friends in TX UT gets 4-5 star kids and have been on the skids for years now.
No nuance there GAT.
