most subsidy programs have been sold to the public as programs that keep generational family farmers on the land. In that, they have failed miserably. They have, however, kept food prices pretty cheap in this country. If big business gets total control of agriculture, they will set prices and consumers will pay what they demand. Government programs have staved this off to an extent, otherwise food would be like health care, we would be debating if it is a 'right' or not.
I'm a free market guy, but its a pretty complex deal to feed a citizenry that no longer can feed itself.
