the whole picture.
First and 10 from the UK 38
Witter pretty clearly gets the first down at the 27-27.5
Ref at top of screen signals to stop the clock, indicating a first down. Yet, he stands and marks the spot at almost the 30.
The chains on top apparently move, but I didn't see it.
Although the play was at the 27.5 and the ref marked it closer to the 29-30, the ball is inexplicably spotted at the 28.5 Has to be one or the other.
With 30 seconds on the clock, the referee winds the clock while the Ump is still spotting the ball and then continues to stand there for about 3 seconds as if he's waiting for a substitution or to make sure the referee is ready.
Ball is snapped with 25 seconds, caught at 24 seconds and Moore should have been out of bounds at 23-22 seconds but he was tackled at 22 seconds.
The chains at the bottom of the field match where the ball was spotted, suggesting the previous play was not a first down.
Moore is very clearly tackled beyond the first down marker at the 27-27.5 yard line even though he was initially hit and driven back at the 26, yet the clock does not stop.
One of these two plays HAS to be a first down and the clock must be stopped until the ball is completely set and ready for play. Not kinda, sorta, almost spotted but the umpire is still standing over it. Spotted and ready for play.
I know most MU fans noticed this, but all the outside attention is being placed on the events after the play, while the events before the play were nearly as egregious and potentially just as costly. Had the clock not been would 4-5 seconds too soon, We might have been just a tiny bit more ready to pull off a better play/read.
Now, had this sequence been handled properly, the apparent ball slap ordeal might not have mattered or even occurred.
The lackadaisical effort by the refs to spot the ball after the ball slap is inexcusable.
The fact that Moore made no effort to try to maintain the ball or hustle to get it is inexcusable to me. If you act like nothing happened, people are often going to think nothing happened.
The final play was pass interference on Kentucky. I've seen that type of play be called PI and not PI countless times. PI is a ridiculously inconsistent penalty at all levels of football. The difference, is that if you call the PI on Adam Sparks in the 3rd quarter, then you must call the PI on Kentucky at the end.
But, an appropriately competent MU football team would not have had multiple bad snaps. Countless dropped balls. Ridiculous penalties.
Based on physical talent, MU wins that game by 7-10 points. Mental issues equals a six point loss.
