the dude was a bit of a loner anyway. had some kind of relationship with a chick but it appears like most of his time was spent in casinos or at his house. i'd guess he didn't have many friends and he was retired so it's not like there were co-workers or others around him who would see his descent into crazy.

his life seemed pretty empty. having money and no family or friends to enjoy it with can be pretty damned depressing. i think he just got more and more depressed and when even gambling failed to register any sort of thrill, he started looking for an out.

i'm sure he contemplated suicide before. he may have never attempted it or talked to anyone about it, but i'm sure that's the path he was on.

he had money, time, nobody around him, and he was suicidal. rather than going out quietly he wanted to go out with flair, wanted to finally be 'important' and remembered for something.
