Local police have never been doing the work of immigration agencies. They arrest people for criminal offenses, and then if they are found to be illegal, they are held longer for immigration officials to deal with. This is no different than if they arrest Rask for Public Intoxication in Illinois but then hold you for possible transfer to Vermont on child porn warrants. They aren't out hunting for illegals, but when they present themselves in the criminal justice system, the feds are notified.
