they're taught to say things like "I'm here to make sure you are completely satisfied with your experience with me today, may I ask with whom I have the pleasure to speak with?"
They're just following a script.
And maybe I should add that this was AT&T that was the culprit today, and they took care of my issue very well and promptly, besides all the wordiness. Just a little pet peeve with the unnecessary babbling from customer service people working for huge companies is all.
