I was in a fortunate place when I retired early at 52.

I had paid my house off early so I had no mortgage to worry about anymore. Even though this house is too big for me it doesn't make any financial sense for me to get a new place. When I feel like the upkeep of this place is too much as I get older I will downsize then.

I think your plan is fine. One thought though if you downsize think about when your kids/grandkids/etc come to visit.

Have you thought about paying off your house early, if that is financially possible?
