I'm not sure it's THE ploy here. I think this is more ego and political naivete coupled with an aggressive establishment that wants to send a message, as well as an aggrieved press/media that is determined to make the guy's life hell.

I'm not saying he didn't collude or that the Russians didn't meddle. I think those things have happened in every election going back a good distance in history.
