When Mizzou joined the SEC, Auburn floated the idea of switching to the East and Mizzou going into the West. Alabama vetoed the proposal. The stated reason is Alabama would no longer be able to play it's two biggest rivals, Tennessee & Auburn every season. According to various media reports, the actual reason was Alabama perceived that being in the East would allow Auburn the opportunity to improve its recruiting, I.e. Greater presence in GA & FL.
From Mizzou's perspective, it would be trading Kentucky & Vandy for Ole Miss & Muss St,
