is why group insurance has been affordable for so many for so long-the risk was spread among the entire employee base. Obviously the older employers were higher risk, but at the same time the younger crowd contributed to rate experience through unexpected incidents and some planned like child birth. All these people you say should have saved more very likely paid into their group insurance for years with the expectation that this pattern would continue. Not because they were looking for a free ride.
