the top half of teams in, like the NBA and NHL for example, then you would be okay with it deciding the champion?

The NCAA tournament allows 68 teams in, including auto-qualifiers. The NBA, NHL, and NFL allow teams with losing regular-season records to qualify for their playoffs and to be crowned champions despite a losing regular-season record.
