they still work as standalone radios.
Repeaters in that region are still up and operational, just not connected to phone/internet.
Many of the metro areas have storm spotters using HAM radio equipment to spot and track severe weather. Hospitals still use it to coordinate disaster communications, as do emergency management coordinators.
The hobbyists use it for day-to-day communications, but that is just to make sure everything works when it is needed.
Why do first responders still carry 2-way radios? I mean, there's all this cellular technology out there, right?
I can sit in my truck at Johnson County Community College and talk on a repeater in Boonville. And that's not even using a frequency for extreme long range communications.
