a defined benefit plan coupled with pretax investments. It was obvious(to me) from the get go that once debt was eliminated from the equation that my tax rate in retirement would remain the same. Accordingly it was prudent to have after tax savings to offset at least part of the taxes on pretax investment withdrawals. I do agree with your point about persons who were in lower tax rates almost automatically seeing little change.
