"Cleaner energy demands" have quite a bit to do with it. Consumer demands have changed drastically over the last decade. More people are eating "organic" and looking for sustainability and cleaner alternatives to everything. Shoot, I spoke with a ornamental shrub nursery recently who said they recently changed from using herbicide to kill weeds to now using rice husks. It's made a bigger influence on his business than he ever imagined because people want a cleaner alternative. There is a demand for cleaner energy.
Energy companies obviously want to make a profit, but they also want their consumers to be happy. Consumers are moving towards high efficiency, greener alternatives and it's having a negative impact on the coal industry.
