from a 'fetch it' guy to a drywaller/painter to a framer to a lead.... and bcome a skilled worker

No different from factory or restaurant work. Learn the culture of the industry.. learn some skills.. prove your work ethic.. and get rewarded/promoted.

Union electricians and pipefitters etc learn their SKILL from the union. They serve a purpose that saves companies money over the long run.
