Ten years ago at virginia tech. I was in a business meeting

in my office in salem, va. Someone said there had been a shooting at tech. I was the only alumnus but everyone knew someone from the university.
Throughout the morning, the body count kept rising. From OMG three people have been killed to eight, then 13, then twenty. By the time it was over and 32 had been killed, i was numb to the number.
I spoke later with a first responder. He described the classroom scene. Use your imagination, it was horrific. He said the kids were at their desks or on the floor, and their cell phones kept ringing. Pretty much non stop. A room full of dead young people with twenty cell phones ringing all the time.
It was a tough day.
I hadn't met any of the victims, but i knew each one of them.
