academics about this stuff. Low fee index funds beat the vast majority of managed funds. Period.
You can be like Warren Buffett and go with a value index and it may give you a wild ride, but will probably do better over the long run than an S&P 500 index fund.
Small cap will most probably do better also, but, it too is an index.
If someone whispers "hedge fund" to you......run.
