I think you are in a little over your head in what you are trying to accomplish, particularly given you have selected a losing position to start from in trying to defend Kim.
Vanatta actually did suffer considerable significant casualties from his roster in the season in question due to academic issues and ineligibility. The program's first ever 7'er Booker Brown was lost to the season after becoming academically ineligible. One of the season's 3 lone wins was an early season victory over Detroit in which Brown grabbed 24 rebounds before becoming ineligible. More significantly, Gene Jones also was lost for the season to academic ineligibility. Jones would return the next year, Norm Stewart's first, and avg 18.7 ppg and 10.7 rebounds and be selected by the Bucks in the NBA draft.
5 of the 8 non-con games that season were on the road. On 4 occasions the Tigers took opponents into overtime that season only to lose: road games against Rutgers, Colorado, and Santa Clara as well as at home against SLU. It was a different era entirely, rummies like Kim defeated didn't exist in those days.
5 of our 8 wins this season were to atrocious teams that wouldn't have existed in that era:
Alabama A&M - #351
Tulane - #242
Northwestern State - #297
Western Kentucky - #233
Miami Ohio - #279
It is silly to debate Kim not being inferior to Bob Vanatta. Kim is not only by far the worst coach ever at MU, there is a very strong likelihood he is the worst coach at a major program in the last half century. Vanatta finished 3rd and 4th in the conference while at MU, and was a massively successful coach at Memphis before taking the MU job. His resume and accomplishments dwarf Kim's, and his time at MU was considerably more successful.
Kim's problems were created by him, in large part because he was completely unfit for the role and in over his head. Thankfully, he is no longer MU's coach and hopefully we can rebuild from this 3 year disaster and the impact does not hang over the program for many years to come.
