get 1 or 2 particular players. An assistant is a different situation.
Hiring Romar to get the Porter's would have been an utter disaster. Hiring Martin because they think he's a good coach, and THEN hiring Porter to get the boys is very different.
The only problem can be that if you try to fill all of your assistant ranks that way, you can end up with several guys with ties to specific kids and nobody that can actually coach. It would likely be a mistake to hire Porter to get his boys and hire Walker to get Tilmon, and hire another guy who's a recruiter and not a tactician.
Cuonzo has not been known for high level staffs before. I hope he finds himself at least one guy who's a teacher and not just a recruiter.
This was the problem that Quin ended up with. Brought in assistants to chase specific recruits and ended up with nobody worth a shlt on his staff.
My interest was VERY piqued to see we put 1.1M in the assistant pool....after it had just earlier been reported that Illinois put in 600k, I think.
