when the sun is overhead, there's very little shade because those boards are relatively thin compared to the empty space between them.

When the sun is to the side(late afternoon, evening) the pergola *could* provide more shade since the sun is hitting more of the wide part of the boards...but then your shade is about 15 feet to the side of the pergola because of the angle...most of the patio is once again in direct sun.
