pulled me over for going 20 miles over the speed limit on I-40 outside Flagstaff city limits. Not only that, he was sitting in the median and when I flew by him he immediately put on his lights but couldn't get onto I-40 due to a caravan of semi trucks behind me.
So I gunned it for the next off ramp. I hit that off ramp probably at 90 or 95 and then took off down a random country road making rights and lefts to lose the trooper.
About 5 miles down a secluded country road I pulled into an abandoned parking lot and turned the car off to wait for 30 or so minutes before getting back on I-40.
About 15 minutes later, the trooper came flying down the side road, saw my car, and immediately flew into the parking lot behind me.
I was caught.
So I followed my rules. When he approached my window and asked me if I knew what I did wrong, I ship you not I replied, "I assume I was speeding. When I saw you put your lights on, I noticed a long line of trucks behind me and thought I could lose you if I drove down a country rode. Quite honestly, I can't afford a ticket right now since I'm trying to get back to Missouri on a small budget. So what did I have to lose? I thought I lost you too! How the heck did you find me?!!!"
He actually laughed and said, "I drove a few miles down I-40 and couldn't find you. Then I turned around and drove the other direction and couldn't find you. You really had my mind spinning, son! Then it hit me, I bet that kid took that first exit. And here you are. And here I am."
We both laughed. He ran my driver's license. Check my plates. And then he sent me off with a warning as long as I paid $10 to the city of Flagstaff to enter Walnut Creek Canyon Park to observe the Native American cliff dwellings. That was my "ticket".
I agreed and he actually followed me to the canyon and made sure I paid the park fee and then he made sure I got out of my car and walked into the museum.
When I got out of the car he thanked me for being so nice and honest and for putting my hands on the steering wheel.
Ended up being an AWESOME experience which I never would've had if I hadn't tried to outrun an Arizona state trooper and been completely honest with him when he finally caught me.
Lesson learned. I should've been in jail but I killed him with kindness and humor.
