if you get pulled over do the following

before the cop gets out of his car.

1) Roll the window down

2) Turn off your music/radio

3) Put both hands on top of the steering wheel. A the officer is walking up to your car he/she is looking into your car for warning signs/weapons and he/she is checking your side window to see if your reaching for anything. They are also looking for your hands. If they see your empty hands on top of the wheel, they know that you are making an effort to signal you're not a threat. They greatly appreciate this considering each traffic stop is stressful for a police officer.

4) When the cop asks if you know why he/she pulled you over, immediately own up to it in a cordial tone. Admit you were speeding. Usually you know exactly why you got pulled over. Admit it with a smile and apologize - but don't overdo the apology.

5) Add humor to your admission. When the cop asks if I know why he pulled me over, I always say something like, "I assume for speeding. I certainly was speeding. But I swear to you I looked everywhere to make sure no cops were around before exceeding the speed limit! Where were you? You must've come out of a wormhole or something!" and then laugh.


I've received several warnings over the years but my last speeding ticket was in 1999, and it's all because I follow the rules mentioned above.
