Caring for everyone else...giving your money to everyone else...is a recent phenomenon.
In the 1800s it was everyone on their own. The people who settled this country had to do it on their own. It was a long era of prosper or die. Sure, they may have lent an occasional helping hand to a distant neighbor, but they were under no obligation to do so.
And most people didn't ask.
Now it's expected.
