during the Civil War, if a white family was discovered to have helped runaway slaves escape to freedom, that family was oftentimes executed or at the very least their house was burned to the ground, property pillaged, perhaps some raping took place, etc.
You get the idea. The penalty was harsh.
But it didn't stop people from helping slaves to freedom. They risked EVERYTHING.
The same will happen with illegal immigration.
