The best students have parents who not only give a **** about their kid's education, but actively participation in their schooling. Attending teacher conferences, going to events, participating in fundraisers, helping out with homework, identifying issues that require additional tutoring. Most of that effort is free.
Caring goes a long way and I agree with you that no amount of money can fix that problem. There are terrible students in the most well to do schools all over America. Not everyone is going to do well in school.
