The countries should have been allowed to secede - it was a voluntary union of sovereign states.
After Lincoln, it is a Federal empire run from the center.
It's a no brainer.
North could have decided to not trade with South if they were going to continue slavery and slavery would have died in the South as it did everywhere else without war.
