age old question then is what do we do.
Do we discriminate to make up for past discrimination, or do we just declare everyone equal and move forward?
What we have seen is that leveling the playing field is not easy. Giving one group an undeserved advantage of the other causes resentment and division.
I've posted before that thomas swell said that when he was teaching at cornell and found that blacks were resented by whites who rightly assumed that the blacks got in on a pass with lower standards. Blacks could feel the resentment which led to divisions and hard feelings at the university. Many or most black students were not equipped for the riggers of an ivy league education. Many flunked out, transferred or graduated at the bottom of the class and they were sure it was due to racism.
Powell said that these kids would have done fine at a state school like michigan state but the odds were stacked against them at cornell. And cornell didn't care, he said. They needed black faces on campus so they would just let in more unqualified minorities in the next class.
Not sure what the answer is, but what we are doing now doesn't work. For anyone.
