Thinking a VAT is a "border tax", for instance. Mexico uses the VAT for all goods/services (unless exempt) sold in their country (i.e. excluding exports)....
While a VAT isn't a sales tax - imports from Mexico are subject to sales tax - varying rates based on jurisdiction, (yes, booze from Mexico sold here is subject to tax), just like domestically produced goods are subject to sales tax in the US (and goods exported are not subject to state & local sales tax.)
The VAT argument is really inane.
