It is an interesting article. But "indicts" posters re the 4 star issue? Hardly. If anything it reinforces the argument.
It's not a coincidence that the 4 star players are recruited successfully by the more successful programs. When you throw in the coaching, you get programs like ours, Iowa's, KStates' that win and win big occasionally, but are marked by inconsistency and difficulty competing with the elite programs. There are for sure the occasional upsets, but more so are losses, often blowouts. (See our CCG results for example). The depth problem pointed out is a big one, and agree, there is less margin for error.
Nevertheless, the 4 stars are the ones that differentiate the men from the Boyz. 5 stars too, but there's not that many of them. Our program needs some staffers who can roll up their sleeves and pull 4 stars not just from Missouri but from out of state. The 'evaluate and develop" system has too many flaws to provide a consistently winning program.
